My Foodie Thought - Mexican Style

"As Americans, we tend to look at Mexican food as nachos, which is not Mexican food really - they don't eat them" Anthony Bourdain - American chef, author, and television personality.

It's so true - Mexican food cannot be based on nachos. We cannot based it on any other over elaborated dishes that may look like Mexican dishes. That is why I've been wondering about restaurants that can serve real Mexican food which is fresh and simply Mexican with a hint of innovative twit (but not overly elaborated). I've been looking for something that inspires my taste buds without heavily exaggerated dishes...

This places was Rocco's Tacos and Tequila Bar here in Fort Lauderdale...

My lunch combo yesterday

Yesterday at work, I had nothing to eat for lunch, so I decided to get something online. I had heard of Rocco's Tacos before - good reviews by the way! So I decided to order some Tortilla Soup (a craving that I have lately due to National Soup Month) and some soft tacos.

The Tortilla Soup? It blew my mind. It had a thickness & yummy creaminess to it but not too heavy like a cream soup dish might be. The right amount of shredded chicken...a hint of spice, cilantro, onions...and that crunchy chips on top made the soup an awesome dish. And the overall taste was really fresh with a homemade feeling.

The tacos? they are small but full of fresh flavors. And when I say "small" - I don't mean it in a bad way. It was just the right size with the right amount of ingredients. Each protein along with the veggies, avocado, queso fresco (white cheese), and picantico sauce on the side were an excellent combination.

The Tacos de Carne Asada (grilled steak) was great. The steak was medium well & very soft - although a very flavorful grilled coat.

The Tacos de Camarones was a light treat full of flavor. The shrimps were well cooked - it's hard to find a place that can cook them well - and they had a light citrus flavor.

The Tacos de Pollo were really good, too. The chicken was slightly seasoned with a mild tomato-based sauce. The onions, cilantro, queso fresco & extra picantico sauce just gave it a nice kick to it without the taco being overly elaborated.

I just had an awesome lunch yesterday. It was good food, made fresh, and with a homemade taste to it. First time eating at Rocco's Tacos and Tequila Bar and I'm hooked to it forever.

My next stop will be visiting the restaurant soon...

Good eats, everyone! If you have eaten here or know a great Mexican place, please leave a comment with your suggestion. I would love to read you...
