There are many reasons why people travel.
Some travel to discover beautiful places. Others want to learn about history, meet new people, experience different cultures, or simply escape the everyday routine.
And then there are people like me.
Yes, I want to see the beautiful places too... but I also want to know what we're eating when we get there. 😋
Because when you're a foodie, traveling and eating somehow become part of the same adventure.
Traveling Through Food
I've always believed that one of the best ways to discover a destination is through its food.
Think about it.
You can visit museums, walk through historic streets, admire beautiful buildings and take hundreds (or thousands!) of pictures. But sitting down at a local restaurant, visiting a food market, tasting a traditional dish, or discovering something you've never eaten before gives you a completely different connection to a place.
Food tells stories.
It tells us about traditions, families, geography, history and the people who call that destination home.
And sometimes those stories are served on a plate.
That's one of the things I love most about being both a foodie and a joyful traveler.
The Foodie Traveler Has Different Priorities
Let's be honest.
Foodies travel a little differently.
Other travelers might ask:
"What attractions should we visit?"
The foodie traveler asks:
"Yes, yes... but where are we having lunch?"
Someone says there's a beautiful little town about an hour away.
Wonderful!
But does it have a bakery?
A local market?
A restaurant everybody talks about?
Some strange regional dish I've never tried before?
Suddenly, that one-hour drive sounds VERY interesting. 😂
For a food lover, discovering local cuisine isn't something that happens between sightseeing activities. Sometimes, it is the sightseeing activity.
You Don't Have to Travel Far
The wonderful thing about being a joyful traveler is that an adventure doesn't always require a passport or an airplane ticket.
Sometimes a culinary adventure can happen a few miles from home.
It could be a restaurant you've driven past a hundred times but never visited. A small family-owned bakery. A farmers market. A food festival. Or a neighborhood where another culture has brought its flavors and traditions to your own city.
Being a traveler, at least to me, is also about curiosity.
And being a foodie is very much the same.
Both make us want to discover something new.
Food Creates Travel Memories
Years after a trip, we may forget the name of a street or exactly what time we arrived somewhere.
But isn't it funny how we remember the food?
"Remember that little restaurant we found?"
"Remember that incredible dessert?"
"Remember when we ordered that dish without really knowing what it was?"
Those moments become part of the story.
And sometimes the imperfect food experiences make even better stories.
Not every culinary adventure is going to be spectacular. Sometimes you order something you absolutely love.
Other times you take one bite, smile politely and think:
"Well... at least I tried it." 😂
That's part of traveling too.
Be Curious. Be Hungry. Be a Joyful Traveler.
Maybe that's what connects foodies and travelers so perfectly.
Both are curious.
We want to experience something different. We want to discover new places, new cultures and new flavors. We want stories to bring home with us.
For me, being a joyful traveler isn't about checking destinations off a list.
It's about enjoying the journey.
And being a foodie isn't simply about finding the "best" restaurant.
It's about enjoying the discovery.
So travel when you can. Explore your own city when you can't. Try the local specialty. Visit the little restaurant. Walk through the market. Ask someone what they recommend.
And, most importantly...
Arrive curious—and hungry. 😉
Now it's your turn:
When you travel, how important is food in choosing what you do or where you go?
And here's the real foodie question:
👇 Have you ever planned part of a trip specifically around something you wanted to eat?
Tell me about it in the comments. I have a feeling I'm not the only one! 😋✈️🍴
